As per reports, the Centre is mulling to come out with a technology which will help in the traceability of seeds. This technology is expected to come by June 2020. Seed traceability is mainly aimed to help farmers during their purchase of seeds, helping them identify the seed’s origin such as from where the seed has arrived or produced.
Centre has already started coordinating with various state governments to kickstart the barcoding process and implement it at the earliest.
Studies suggest that, India produces 3.80 million tonnes of seeds and has become one of the major exporters of the same to other countries.
There are around 135 seed testing labs and 25 seed certification authorities in India. India has always faced problems with low-quality seeds which causes loss to farmers and ultimately the economy. Many incidents have taken place in the past due to this which have caused extensive damage to crops and have destroyed the livelihood of many farmers.
